The town of Sorso: Among the beautiful beaches and the legendary historical beauties.

With almost 15 thousand inhabitants it is one of the most populous municipalities of Sassarese.  Sorso is a town in the historical territory of Romangia, overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. According to the most likely etymology, the name comes from the Latin deorsum which means “down”.

The territory is rich in archaeological evidence and historical traces of the village of Sorso, which originally became a medieval religious center. In addition, the 18 kilometers of beaches, just minutes from the town, are divided between the beautiful Marina di Sorso and the coast rose of Platamona, always known for the blue sea, light sand and Mediterranean scents.

The most beautiful places in the city of Sorso

Since April 2021 the city of Sorso has also joined the initiative of the historic Green Train of Sardinia from Alghero to Palau passing through Sorso, Sassari and Tempio Pausania.

Sorso and its surroundings offer many attractions to visit including:
• Marina di Sorso

Marina di Sorso

Marina di Sorso is a long and beautiful stretch of fine sand, located in the middle of the Gulf of Asinara and is considered one of the most welcoming and popular beaches of north-west Sardinia. Marina di Sorso, a town a few kilometers from Sassari, is an extensive beach of seven kilometers, bordered by a forest of pines and junipers.

It is very close to the towns in the area: to reach it is advisable to folllow the panoramic road that connects Porto Torres and Castelsardo or coming from Sorso through a special branch or from the Sassari capital, along the provincial road 60, called Buddi Buddi.

The water is transparent, predominantly emerald green with blue reflections, the seabed is sandy rapidly, the soft sand is dotted at its end by a lush spontaneous vegetation. From the coast you can admire beautiful sunsets that are the background to the Gulf of Asinara. Marina di Sorso is very busy, but never overcrowded: its extension allows days of total relaxation.

It is easily accessible: the road that flanks the coast (the state road 200) has several branches towards the coast, called “pettini”. On the beaches of the Marina di Sorso there are numerous establishments for rental of bathing equipment and pedal boats, refreshments, bars and restaurants surroundend by green area, where to take refuge from the summer heat.

Behind a thick and cozy pine forest protects the sand dunes and offers areas for camping. If you are passionate about kite and windsurfing is the ideal beach for you, all year round.

The Beach of Platamona

Platamona represents the coastal strip located within the Gulf of Asinara, in the north of Sardinia between the Marina di Sorso and the tower of Abbacurrente towards Porto Torres.

Historically it is considered the traditional “beach of Sassari”, the entire coastal strip is divided between the municipalities of Porto Torres, Sassari and Sorso, in whose territory falls for the largest extent.

The beach reaches a length of 15 kilometers and is considered the second longest beach in Italy after Rimini. Platamona beach is composed of white sand and shells carried by sea currents.

The bottom of the coast is mostly sandy, populated by a diverse marine fauna consisting of sea bream, sole, bass and murmur. Platanoma is easily accessible from the provincial road 81 coastal through so called “sea discents” that depart from the road to reach the public beaches, which are called “pettini”.

In addition, the beach of Platanoma is perfectly connected to the major neighboring towns (Sassari, Porto Torres, Sorso, Sennori) by public interurban transport lines, such as the ATP Sassari.

The shallow and sandy bottom makes it an ideal place for families with children. When the wind blows, the sea gives endless emotions to fans of surfing and windsurfing.

Platamona is very loved by bathers also because it offers many services: large parking, equipped for campers, camping areas and is accessible to disabled people.

The Parish Church of San Pantaleo

The parish church of San Pantaleo is located in the town of Sorso in north-western Sardinia. Consecrated to worship, the church is home to the homonymous parish and is part of the Archdiocese of Sassari.

Named after the town’s patron saint, it was built in 1836 by the Sassari Antonio Cano in the space where the ancient parish church stood, of which he reused the materials.

The facade was almost finished in June 1840 but the sudden disappearance of the designer, three months later, caused a slowdown of the work. The task of carrying out the factory was entrusted to the architects of Sassari Francesco Agnesa and Angelo Maria Piretto, but numerous interruptions and disputes characterized the following.

Although not yet finished, the building was opened for worship in 1856.
The church is inspired by neoclassical architectural canons: it has a central plan hinged on a large hemispherical dome but with the transverse axis slightly shorter than the longitudinal one, further extended by the deep apse presbytery.

The winery of Sorso: Discovering Sardinia to drink

The town of Sorso, in addition to being known for its beautiful beaches and places of historical origin, is also renowned for the presence of vineyards, making it the city of wine.

The cellar of Sorso is located in Sorso in via Marina n.5, on the main road that connects the town to the sea. The origins of the winery date back to 1955, the fundamental year for the beginning of the activity, dedicated to the cultivation of grapes.

The territory of Romangia, where the winery of Sorso is located, has always been dedicated to the cultivation of vines, from which the raw material is obtained to produce wines of excellent quality.

Inside the cellar you can find a shop, open every day from Monday to Saturday, where you can buy the fine bottled DOC wines that the same winery produces.

In addition, in the store you can also find many items of local tradition: Percorino sardo aged and not, typical Sardinian pasta, extra virgin olive oil and numerous types of liqueurs including Myrtle and Brandy.
