Porto Torres Festha Manna 2015: traditions and devotion

It is one of the most important and awaited religious events of Porto Torres, in northern Sardinia. An event that begins on May 3 and ends on the day after Pentecost, May 25, 2015. This is Festha Manna, ”the big feast”.
The procession – Festha Manna in Porto Torres begins on May 3. When the Seventeenth-century wooden statues of saints Gavino, Proto and Gianuario are carried in procession from San Gavino basilica to San Gavino a Mare church (both basilica and church are two of the most important things to see in Porto Torres). The wooden statues stay in San Gavino a Mare church until Pentecost, visited by pilgrims everyday.
Pentecost day – Since midnight, pilgrims from Sassari and neighboring countries arrive in San Gavino basilica. In this basilica, at 4am, the Mass dedicated to the pilgrims is celebrated. After the Mass, pilgrims goes to Balai Vicino in order to pay homage to the three martyrs. In the afternoon the procession that will bring statues back to San Gavino basilica starts.
The day after Pentecost – Festha Manna begins on this day. In the morning the Mass is celebrated. Then there is the procession that arrives on the port of Porto Torres.
