Faradda di li candareri 2016: Feast of the Assumption in Sardinia between sacred and profane
- Published: 7-07-2016
- Category: Events
The origin is an ancient vow to Our Lady of the Assumption: after the vow, the plague that hit the city of Sassari ceased. Today, Faradda di li candareri is one of the most awaited religious event on the year. An event that will take place again in 2016, on August 14th.
On the day of the Faradda, the “gremi” (association of arts and professions) of Sassari carry high wood “votive candles” through corso Vittorio Emanuele and arrive at the church of Santa Maria di Betlem. In addition to this, other “side events” will take place: discesa dei piccoli Candelieri, Discesa dei medi, l’arrostita dei Candelieri (a gastronomic event), il concerto per i Candelieri.
The feast of the Assumption
As already said, the Faradda de li candareri takes place on August 14th. August 15th is the day of the feast of the Assumption. And these are three ideas to spend that day in Sardinia:
- Visit Sassari, one of the most beautiful cities of north Sardinia: among the things to see there are Duomo (the cathedral), fontana di Rosello (a monumental fountain), parco di Monserrato (a large park).
- Porto Torres is near Sassari. A place where an ancient past meets a wonderful nature.
- If you want to spend a day lying on white sand, in Stintino there are two beautiful beaches: la Pelosa and la Pelosetta.
How to get there
The main tourist port near Sassari is Porto Torres. From Porto Torres, take the county road 131 towards south and follow the road signs to Sassari. The journey by car takes about twenty minutes.
