Sarule: Autunno in Barbagia between hills, sweets and carpets

It’s the country of hills, woods and nature. But it’s also the country of the typical sweets, the bread made following the traditions, and the refined carpets. And visitors can admire all of this on 19th and 20th September, when Sarule will be the stage of Autunno in Barbagia.

Sarule

Welcome to the heart of Barbagia: here there’s the small town of Sarule. The country is surrounded by a territory made of gentle hills, full of sources and covered by woods of holm oaks and maples. In this area there are some of the most ancient mountains of Sardinia, where the three peaks of Gonare, Gonareddu and Punta Lotzori stand out.

Sarule has also a very ancient history, proved by domus de janas, nuraghi and churches. But Autunno in Barbagia is principally the moment of the “cortes apertas”, the “open courtyards” that show the typical productions of a country: the refined and very colored carpets made of cotton and raw wool, the bread, the sweets.

How to reach

Sarule is in one of the most characteristic and traditional zones in Barbagia. And it’s near Nuoro: starting from it, to reach Sarule you just have to take the state road 131 and then, after the road signs to Macomer, take the state road 128 to Orani and Sarule.

If you need to reach Nuoro, the two main tourist ports in the surroundings are Arbatax and Porto di Olbia, the first on the oriental coast of Sardinia, the second on the North-East coast. In both cases, the trip by car lasts about a hour.
