Autunno in Barbagia last leg: Orune, the cult of the water and the trees

The last leg of Autunno in Barbagia is Orune: from December 11 to 13, it’s one of the most mysterious and ancient places of Sardinia.

Orune

Built in the heart of Barbagia, Orune is known for the Neolithic settlements, with ancient sites such as Su Lidone, Su Pradu, Lorana and the famous monument of Su Tempiesu, a Bronze Age sacred spring. And, in addition to this, there are several nuraghi (such as Santa Lulla e Sant’Efisio), tombe dei giganti (literally, “tombs of the giant”) and dolmens.

And the landscape that surrounds Orune is very special even for another reasons: the majestic cork trees. Another peculiarity of Orune is its membership in the literary park dedicated to Grazia Deledda, who described these places in his famous novel Colombi e sparvieri.

How to get there

To get from Nuoro to Orune by car:

  • Take the SS389 road
  • Take the SP51 road

The trip by car takes about half an hour. To get to Nuoro, the two most important tourist ports are Olbia and Arbatax.
