A project to rationalise the national maritime services was launched by the Italian Government in 1936. Tirrenia Società Anonima di Navigazione was founded in Naples. The company started its business activities with the transport of goods and passengers in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in North Africa and in the western Mediterranean Sea. In 2012 the company was bought by Compagnia Italia di Navigazione and became a private company. Today, Tirrenia is one of the most important names in the Italian shipping industry.
Tirrenia: Destinations and main connections
The company manages connections with Sardinia and Sicily, offering routes such as Genoa – Porto Torres and Naples – Palermo. All the vessels in the Tirrenia fleet are certified by the Class Certificate, the Passenger Transport Safety Certificate and the Safety Management System. The ferries are well-equipped and offer passengers the best comfort and service during their journey. They sail at an average speed of 26 knots, making them one of the fastest and most efficient services of its kind in the Mediterranean.
Tirrenia operates regularly throughout the year, but the number of crossings provided by the company increases significantly as the summer months approach.
